Fresh fruit is vital to our diet and finding the best fresh fruit is very important. The state of California is known for growing some of the best fruits and vegetables in the world. Many farmers in the area take great pride in providing the public with excellent fruit at local farmers markets and grocery stores. Here are a few of the top places you can go in San Francisco to find the freshest fruit to use in your cooking or to just simply eat.

Heart of the City Farmers Market

Located in Union Nations Plaza above the Civic Center BART in the Van Ness/Civic Center MLS neighborhood, the Heart of the City Farmers Market is a great place for fruit. They provide all kinds of independent farmers ready to sell you delicious fruit and a number of other great goods. M.A. Farms is one of the vendors with plenty of stone fruits, while Medina Berry Farm provides all kinds of pesticide-free berries and many other fruits. You’ll also find plenty of pies, chocolates and specialty items at the market.

The best part about buying fruit at the Heart of the City Farmers Market is the price. You’ll find plenty of affordable options and they even take government assistance programs and alternative forms of currency.

Frog Hollow Farm

Found in the Ferry Building Marketplace where South Beach meets the Barbary Coast/Financial District, Frog Hollow Farm is one of the top spots for fruit in the entire city. This outpost provides direct-from-the-farm seasonal fruit and it’s even organic. The wonderful selection includes pastries, gelatos and many other goodies made with the wonderful fruits. Frog Hollow Farm sells the fruits by themselves, but also carries marmalades, chutneys, conserves and so much more.

The fruit comes from the 143-acre certified organic farm in Brentwood, California. It’s about an hour drive from the city, but you don’t have to go that gar to enjoy the amazing apples, cherries, plums, persimmons, pears, apricots and other fruits. You can even get olives, heirloom tomatoes and other items from the outpost.

The Fruit Guys

A South San Francisco place for fruit, The Fruit Guys is located at 490 Eccles Avenue. They are known as the top fruit provider in the area and it’s a family owned and operated business. When you head to The Fruit Guys, you will be able to enjoy fresh fruit and plenty more. They actually deliver weekly fruit boxes, along with plenty of other options when it comes to buying your fruit.

Alemany Farmers Market

Another great farmers market in San Francisco, the Alemany Farmers Market on the “back side” of Bernal Heights was the first one opened in the entire state. It was opened in 1943 and has been selling great fruit ever since. The farmers market is not an upscale place at all and the prices are rather affordable. You will find plenty of fruit, veggies, flowers, breads, nuts and so much more here. They even have food stands if you want to stop in for a meal.

Choosing the right place to get your fruit in San Francisco is important. Not only are there more affordable options than most chain grocery stores, but you can also get locally grown fruit from any of the places above.
