The Rodney Dangerfield of the city, Stonestown is home to San Francisco State University and Park Merced, the city’s largest rental development, but this neighborhood in the southwest corner just can’t get much respect. Yes, it’s got the marine layer. It’s also got Park Merced, great transit, Ft. Funston, and so much more.
Stonestown Neighborhood Vibe
San Francisco State Univesity, Stonestown Mall, and Park Merced dominate the neighborhood. It’s an interesting combination of suburban mall complex, university housing and facilities, and a large rental development with thousands of homes that is slated for a major re-development, bringing tens of thousands of new rental homes to the neighborhood. There are lots of outdoor opportunities. Ft. Funston, Lake Merced, and the Pacific Ocean are all incredibly convenient.
Popular Stonestown Home Styles
Park Merced offers rental homes in tower buildings, traditional apartments, and townhouse style homes. SFSU offers students on-campus housing that looks and feels like, well, on-campus housing. Lakeside is immediately to the east, and the Pacific Ocean is immediately to the west.
Getting Around in Stonestown
The K and M lines provide Muni light-rail service to the neighborhood, but because the area is on the southwest edge of town, it can take a while for Muni service to get you where you’re going. The area was developed assuming you have a car, and while you’ll probably find transit to and from the neighborhood much quicker with a car, you can certainly make it without one.
