More About Forest Hill Extension

Forest Hill Extension is bounded by Dewey Boulevard, Woodside, Portola, and Kensington. Within those borders, you’ll find single-family homes — and not even one condominium or multi-unit building. Homes here are about 25% smaller than the homes in Forest Hill itself, but they’re still over 2,000 square feet on average. Developed starting in the 1910s, Forest Hill Extension is an upscale enclave of detached single-family homes, many set back from the street so there’s green space on every block. There’s easy access to transit, with several bus lines as well as the Forest Hill and West Portal Muni stations nearby. A rare urban treat: Edgehill Mountain Park, established after multiple mudslides wiped out houses on the west slope of the hill.

Neighborhood Vibe

Compared to its namesake neighborhood (Forest Hill) just across Dewey Boulevard, Forest Hill is slightly less grand. As a rule, the homes are smaller, but smaller doesn’t mean less desirable. Forest Hill Extension is an upscale area of single-family homes, surrounded by busy streets as well as Laguna Honda Hospital and Juvenile Hall.

 

Popular Home Styles

“Forest Hill Extension” translates to “single-family home” when you run it through the real estate dictionary. We don’t know of even one condominium within the borders of this neighborhood.  Spanish Mediterranean homes grace the streets of Forest Hill Extension, with some bungalows and Craftsman style homes as well.

 

Getting Around

Several bus lines serve the neighborhood, and the West Portal and Forest Hill Muni stations are nearby for those who don’t mind walking a few blocks. Drivers who commute to the South Bay have relatively easy access to 280 through Glen Park. Driving across town to the Bay Bridge requires patience in traffic.
