More About The Anza Vista Neighborhood

Anza Vista’s claim to fame: it sits atop the former Calvary Cemetery. The housing crisis is nothing new in our fair City; SF voted in 1902 to ban burials at all but two cemeteries to increase available space for living people. The graves at Calvary Cemetery were moved to Colma in the 1930s and 1940s, making way for housing to be built. In this neighborhood bounded by Geary, Divisadero, Turk, and Masonic, you’ll find a mix of mid-century homes and some mid-size apartment buildings. Kaiser Permanente has a large campus on Geary, and there’s a sizable shopping center with chain stores on the corner of Geary and Masonic.

Anza Vista Neighborhood Vibe

Bounded by Geary, Divisadero, Turk, and Masonic, Anza Vista has a decidedly suburban feel, surrounded by the bustle of the City. Kaiser Permanente has a big presence on the north side of the neighborhood, and the sizable mall on the corner of Geary & Masonic brings many shoppers to the area. A block inside the edges, though, you’ll find wide residential streets with spacious homes and some amazing views.

It’s a mix of property types and eras here, with many mid-century homes mingling with unit buildings of an earlier vintage. There are also a handful of midsize condominium developments in Anza Vista.

 

Getting Around in Anza Vista

All four streets that border Anza Vista carry Muni bus lines, so while there isn’t a line that runs through it, you can walk a few blocks and find a bus. Car commuters will have a slog across town to get to any of the major arteries (Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, 101, I-280) out of the City.
