The neighborhood that is now Forest Hill was once part of a heavily wooded land owned by Adolph Sutro (1830 – 1898). The land was purchased from his heirs and development and sale of homes began in 1912, with the first home being completed in early 1914. It continues on today as a hilly and highly desirable neighborhood of large single family homes.
Forest Hill is part of District 4 on a San Francisco MLS map, and is one of the west of twin peaks neighborhoods. Its neighborhood designation in the San Francisco MLS is 4c. The south-east boundaries of the neighborhood are created by Laguna Honda, Dewey Blvd. and Taraval St. On the north-west side of the neighborhood it backs up against Golden Gate Heights and the Inner Sunset.
Homes for sale are single-family homes, almost always fully detached and situated on lots that are a generous size in comparison to most San Francisco lots. There are roughy 650 homes in the neighborhood.
Homes for sale in Forest Hill are convenient to a small strip mall with several restaurants and stores at the intersection of Dewey and Laguna Honda streets. Other than that, the nearest cafes would be located in the West Portal, Inner Sunset, or Miraloma Park neighborhoods. If a corner store on your block is important to you, Forest Hill won’t be the right neighborhood for you.
The Forest Hill muni station provides service from the K, L, M, and T muni trains. There are several bus lines that also make stops at the Forest Hill station. Almost all of the homes in Forest Hill have garages, and the neighborhood provides fairly direct access to I-280 via Glen Park.
